A better media player?

#1

Beitrag von Nixay »

I updated my Beyonwiz T3 from the stock firmware to OpenATV a couple of months ago and I'm grateful for a new lease of life from my machine. I must admit I haven't found it as smooth a transition as others report. I have a few things I'm still trying to figure out but the main thing I want to know right now is, what are people using as their media player for recorded TV shows?

The media player that comes as part of the fresh install has very low WAF, is unintuitive with the default behaviour of adding a file to a playlist first before you can play it and is uninformative about the selected file. The Beyonwiz media player was great, had the blurb for the show you had highlighted, along with file size, duration etc and just played when you pressed enter. It also reported disk free space at the bottom. I didn't realise I didn't have eyes on my disk space until a couple of days ago when it filled up and stopped recording, so I hastily deleted a bunch of stuff, which I shortly thereafter learned wasn't actually deleted - they just had .bin appended to the end of the filename - and recordings still didn't work.

I'm assuming someone has made a much better plugin/add-on to replace this but try as I might I haven't found one - I'm still learning my way around this project. What is everyone here using?

I always use EMC (runs usually automaticly on key VIDEO)
It can be adjusted for several needs, and mine looks like that:

Hi Nixay,
A screenshot of my V2 running oATV ... very similar to the stock BW display that you're familiar with. To achieve this, install the 'Overlay HD' skin from the Plugin list:
  • Menu>Plugins>Green [Install Plugins]>Skin Packages>select 'Overlayhd'>Green [Install Plugin]
then:
  • Menu>Setup>Usage&GUI>>Skin settings>cycle thru (with L/R arrow buttons) to select skin

Hi Nihai,

The same media player you used, and are used to, is available on OpenATV. When you press the MEDIA button you should be activating the EMC media player. This is a comprehensive media player but it will not be what you are used to. When you start EMC press MENU to go to the EMC menu and then scroll down the list of options to EMC Setup and press OK. From the GENERAL section of the menu select Disable EMC and change the setting to Yes. Press GREEN to save the settings and then use the POWER button to restart the GUI. When the GUI restarts you should find that when you now press the MEDIA button you should be taken to the Movie Selection media player which you should now recognise as the same player used on the Beyonwiz firmware.

Regards,
Ian.

Thank you! I knew I must have been missing something. I'm using a customised remote which doesn't have a MEDIA button, I've previously accessed everything I needed on the BW through the main menu. I didn't realise there were functions I couldn't access without it. I guess I'll need to work out some remapping of buttons.

Hi Nihai,

I am proposing to add a new configuration option that will optionally add "Movie Selection" to the Main Menu. This should solve the issue you are encountering with your limited remote control. This may also be helpful for other users who may be using universal or alternate remote controls with limited buttons.

UPDATE: A pull request has been filed that, if accepted, will add a "Movie Selection" menu item to the Main Menu. The option can be enabled from the "OSD Settings" screen with the new configuration option "Show Movie Selection in Main Menu". Set this item to "Yes" to add the option to your Main Menu.

Regards,
Ian.

Hi Nihai,

You request was unexpected and unusual but you explained the issue and it turned out to be easy to fix. The fix may also benefit others.

Apart from the ARROW button navigation, if there is anything else that can be improved then please let us know.

Regards,
Ian.
