It looks like the ethernet port on my T2 has finally died, so I've been rummaging through my bits and pieces and have pulled out several old usb WiFi dongles.
Is it as simple as just plugging one in and seeing what happens?
What if it needs a driver plugin downloaded, which, of course, can't be done due to the non-working ethernet?
Is there a list of supported devices?
Bill

Re: WiFi Dongles
Plug it in and see!
I just tried the old WiFi dongle I used to use on my U4 with BW firmware (before I changed to a wired connection), and it appeared straight away under OpenATV, under Setup > Network > Device Settings.

Re: WiFi Dongles
Just tried:
DLink DWA-171
Netgear WG111v2
oppo (Atheros AR9271) - came with an old bluray player.
TP-Link TL-WN727N
TP-Link TL-WN722N
None were recognized.
Testing procedure was:
Ethernet unplugged.
Power off on rear.
(unplug prev test device)
Plug in new test device edit: - front port, if that matters.
Power on on rear.
Check Menu/Setup/Network/Device Settings.
Is there a way to tell OATV to try to use WiFi? Dim memory of such a thing during the only install I've done, can't find another way to turn it on.
Icing on the cake: the oppo device has a postit note on it saying (in my own scrawl!) Works with BW!!!
VERY close to scotch o'clock here...

Re: WiFi Dongles
Hi Bill,
Which Wi-Fi device to you want to be using?
Next, go to "MENU > Setup > Network > Device Settings" and disable the faulty "LAN connection". Then enable and configure the "WLAN connection". That should restore your network connectivity.
An alternate idea is to get a USB based gigabit network dongle.
Regards,
Ian.

- DLink DWA-171 -> https://linux-hardware.org/index.php?id=usb:2001-3314 -> network-usb-rtl88xxau
- Netgear WG111v2 -> https://linux-hardware.org/?id=usb:0846-6a00 -> network-usb-rtl8187
- Atheros AR9271 -> https://linux-hardware.org/?view=search ... R9271#list -> ???
- TP-Link TL-WN727N -> Not found no my usual driver listing website -> network-usb-rt2800 (Possibly)

Re: WiFi Dongles
Good news!
The Netgear WG111v2 works with the network-usb-rtl8187 driver.
Sadly neither of the 2 network-usb-rtl88xxau drivers worked with my DLink DWA-171 (it's much smaller, if nothing else!)
Haven't tried the others as yet...
Thanks
Bill

Re: WiFi Dongles
For the benefit of those that may follow...
As per my original post I had the following (older) WiFi dongles to try:
DLink DWA-171
Netgear WG111v2
oppo (Atheros AR9271) - came with an old bluray player.
TP-Link TL-WN727N
TP-Link TL-WN722N
I believe the oppo works with the original BW firmware
With Ian Sav's help I got the Netgear to work with OpenATV. None of the others would.
For future reference, most of the available plug in drivers list the underlying chip set rather than the make and model of the device; so Ian's link to https://linux-hardware.org/?view=search to search for the chip set is extremely useful, even if it doesn't have all devices possible.
Making it harder for all is that it seems that the chips undergo revisions that seem to mean even though your device is listed on that site, and a very similar driver is avail from OATV, it doesn't work - eg the TL-WN722N is listed as having the (Realtek) RTL8188EUS chip, and OATV has a driver for RTL8188FU, but that driver doesn't work for that device.
Good luck!
Bill

Re: WiFi Dongles
Hi Bill,
Thanks for the update.
If users find that the documentation does not match the hardware they have there are still things that can be tried. Users can install the "usbutils" package from the command line and use the "lsusb" command to show more information regarding the attached USB devices.
Regards,
Ian.
