    >16:9 or wider movies, aspect ratio fix/workaround?

    Hi

There's a long time problem on some boxes running OpenATV, the aspect ratio of movies 2:35:1 or wider are stretched out to 16:9 ("egg heads").
Setting in AV settings is set to "letterbox"
To correct this you should go to AV settings and cycle Aspect Ratio options for >16:9, you change it to something else and then to letterbox again. The problem disappears, movies are displayed correctly, but it only lasts until next reboot. Then the aspect ratio is wrong again.

I read that this may be a driver problem and it may not be fixed at all, so I think that could be a workaround to this. Like force letterbox settings to reapply on boot, like it does when we manually change this setting, the aspect ratio then is correct.

    My box is a Vu+ Duo2, running OpenATV 6.1
I've read other reports with similar problems on other STBs.

Please take a look at this, this problem makes a powerful STB useless for playing movies, I can even help with this.

I'm sorry to post in english, I could not explain all this in german.

Did you also had this problem?

Should not be needed a plugin to fix this, it's something wrong in OpenATV enigma2 code or in the OE-Alliance core itself. This problem was introduced almost a year now ( October - November 2016).
There's many posts here on the forum reporting this ( in german)

The best workaround I found yesterday is executing the command:
    Code:
    echo -n letterbox > /proc/stb/video/policy2
It's clearly not a fault or bug in the drivers alone, letterbox for wide movies works but you have to set it every time STB boots.

After this, letterbox works like it should, I did a small script to be run automatically at boot.

    enigma2/avswitch.cpp at master * openatv/enigma2 * GitHub

It should be settled here, but it does not seem to work.
Probably it is then but also a driver problem.
Perhaps you can also anchor something there.

    greetings

Hi and thanks for your reply

I'm convinced that the last commit from here is the main cause of this problem. The date matches the time when the problem started to happen.

If you take a look at the code from OpenPLi and OpenVix, none have this ability to write policy settings also in '/proc/stb/video/policy2' file, none of them seem to have this problem with the aspect ratio when playing movies wider than 16:9 (e.i. 2:35.1)

This was done to allow third party plugin 'Aspect ratio switch' to work in some strange cases, but it may broke default image aspect ratio settings.

I would kindly ask to some administrator to take a look at this.

The change at that time was necessary. Also has to deal with the problem only indirectly.
In some cases, the selection of the setting does not seem to be fixed.
    VU +, but also EdisionOS2 +.
You can simply test the cpp of pli or Openvix times is the same.
    ( edit)

I can test this evening. Then also sh4.
Therefore always difficult for me whether it runs in all boxes alike.

    greetings

    Sorry for wrong Info.
    cpp must build.

If you have this problem and until it's properly fixed, you should try this:

    SSH/Telnet:

    Code:
    echo -n letterbox > /proc/stb/video/policy2
Then test it by going to EMC/MediaPlayer and check with a movie (aspect 2:40:1 or similar)
If aspect ratio is correct after you executed the command, then you can use the simple script attached.

    Download the file
Remove .txt extension, should be literally
    letterbox
Use (S)FTP to copy the file to
    Code:
    /etc/init.d/
    SSH/Telnet:
    Code:
    chmod +x /etc/init.d/letterbox
    update-rc.d letterbox defaults
Reboot and test. If your STB is too slow, you may need to adjust the time for the "sleep" command, edit script with text editor

At least is better than having to manually go to menu/av and cycle aspect ratio settings.

As always, I'm not responsible for any damage that occurs to your box when trying this

What is to do, to save this after a firmware Flash (online update)?
