    Thanks for your answer.

Which exactly do you own a USB HUB ? Do you have USB v3.0 there and do you have a 5V / 3A or better adapter there ?
The usb-hub has usb 3.0 ports, but on the package of the usb-hub it is written "1TB"(I think this means the maximum capacity of an external hdd which the usb-hub can handle) and it has a 2A adapter,4 usb ports and every usb port has a maximum power rating of "0.5". If they wrote these on the webpage where I ordered, I wouldn't buy this usb-hub...

USB 3.0 should handle at least 0.9A for each connector. So together 3x 0.9A = adapter with electric current 2.7A (approx. 3 Amps).

Although a current of 0.5A is perhaps enough to power and start the micro-electronics on the PCB. In my opinion, the electronics on the external HDD board are powered from the USB interface. The HDD itself is powered by the adapter supplied with this external USB HDD box.

Why are you shopping from China ? :-) Buy some other and high quality USB HUB.

However, there is no guarantee that the USB HUB will solve the problems.

Maybe also the chipset in your USB HUB is a cheap shard and detects your external HDD as a USB 1.0 device, so maybe it will then allow 0.1A only for this device ? :-)

Well, I don't want to write too early, but I have been testing for about 4 days, with this setup:

The 2.5 usb hdd connected to stb
Vu+ wifi adapter connected to usb-hub WITHOUT usb-hub's own power adapter connected to power source

In this way, the internet seems working nice, so I think connecting Vu+ wifi adapter directly to the stb's usb port without using extension cable/usb-hub was causing some interference problems rather than power-shortage.Additionally, there were some ftp problems, while transferring files on Filezilla, especially while transferring large files, it was suddently stopping saying something like "Econn aborted", I was not sure if they were related to using the wifi and usb hdd at the same time, but using usbhub(both with and without using the usb-hub's's own power adapter) and on Filezilla ftp app(on Windows) selecting "Active mode" instead of "Passive mode" and selecting "keep the connection alive" in the options, seem like solved the ftp problems.

You could also work in such a way that you would try to switch WiFi dongles and HDDs between you. You plug the WiFi dongle into the second USB port and the HDD into the first USB port - or vice versa.

Then he could try to use another WiFi dongle device (with a different firmware, chipset, power consumption).

It is quite possible that your two devices interact with each other - your WiFi dongle and your external HDD at the same time.
