Cool Wireguard support for OpenATV / Enigma2 Images

    Hey guys,

it has been a while ago since my last request. Since the wireguard project developed a lot and is hopefully already in the newer kernel versions by default, maybe it's time or a good idea to implement it now also here in our enigma2-boxes.

For LibreElec it is automatically implemented since Version 9.2.1:

Configuring WireGuard in LibreELEC (v9.2.1 and newer) [LibreELEC.wiki]

Maybe we can also easily just use these kind of resources and develop a fast wireguard-server possibility with our boxes for remote access to our home networks.

Would love if we can collect our informations/ideas/developments here

Since wireguard package is in the update feed with kernel-modules i tried to install it on newest 6.5 build.
But always get the same error:

    Code:
[#] ip link add wg0 type wireguard
    RTNETLINK answers: Operation not supported
Unable to access interface: Protocol not supported
Its on maxytec multi4k with kernel 4.4.35.
Any ideas how to get it work?

Wireguard works excellent on sf8008 and should on any openatv6.4

On pli forum I was asked if I can help implementing and getting wireguard to work, since then, some advancements have been done (I left) and it seems openatv and openpli have wireguard support, however, I can confirm only that it works on openatv and will not even bother testing it on openpli. In short words, wireguard works great on SF8008.

I wanted to check if there is already official guide/info how to use it as back then when I tried it first time, the error poped up which indicated that the interface is simply not configured, where I though that in the meantime this is resolved but I could not find any thread in english or german explaining how to do it.

I also suppose that I am not the only one who is actually successfully using wireguard on openatv, I would believe openatv as well as openpli devs already tested it and it works.

However, as no info is available, I decided to join this forum just to inform you that wireguard works properly on sf8008.

For specific boxes, there is already wireguard, on Octagon's SF8008 it works like a charm on OpenATV, on openpli it should work too, I did not bother to test it since I dumped openpli forever for good reasons.

actually yes, but it works if you configure it properly.

Your box should work, I assume you also installed required packages, on SF8008 (OpenATV 6.5) following are available (at the time of writting this guide):
    Code:
    kernel-module-wireguard - 0.0.20191219-r0
    kernel-module-wireguard-4.4.35 - 0.0.20191219-r0
    wireguard-tools - 0.0.20191219-r0
    wireguard-tools-bash-completion - 0.0.20191219-r0
Here is a video of a wireguard test in local network, location where this box is located has only 100Mbit/s connection from ISP, however, SF8008 reaches almost 600Mbit/s in local network with a SoC equivalent to rpi4 (rockpi 4 B v1.3 with PoE+):
    https://streamable.com/x8rvaf

in a video, left and middle window are connected to sf8008, window on the right side is connected to a SoC board (rock pi4 B).
rock pi4 starts iperf3 server on its wireguard interface
sf8008 runs iperf3 as client over its wireguard interface
Result shows that the cpu of sf8008 runs at around 43% (2 cores run around 50% and two other around 36) during this test leaving enough room for other tasks even if wireguard's and HW performance is maximized.

Here is a screenshot of receiver information page:

    other info:
    Code:
    uname -a
    Linux sf8008 4.4.35 #1 SMP Tue Nov 17 15:21:33 UTC 2020 armv7l GNU/Linux

    cat /proc/version
    Linux version 4.4.35 (oe-user@oe-host) (gcc version 10.2.0 (GCC) ) #1 SMP Tue Nov 17 15:21:33 UTC 2020
    wg show wg0 output:

Performance is outstanding as expected, I do not think that at any time there will be >5.6 kernels for most receivers, but those having v4 kernel can run wireguard from their router.

Everything works like one would expect, raw 4k streams work also as long as your ISP offers you enough speed (probably around 50Mbits should be enough, however, with 20-30 it might work too).

Setup is quite easy actually and pretty straightforward, the rest is quite user specific.

It works also with openatv 6.4 as long as wireguard packages are installed/available. I tested this for now only on octagon's sf8008 (openatv6.4, openatv6.5 and openpli 7 when I tested available implementations, but since I do not use openpli anymore, I only assume it would work same way).

If openatv/openpli devs do not want to write a guide, what is it worth for you if one writes it (or maybe enigma plugin)? I could write it but before wasting my time I wanted to ask here, if openatv devs did ever successfully connect and use wireguard and if yes, why is there no info how to do what I do and describe below?

I just joined and did not read the rules, but if you need decent vpn provider with wireguard support and ability to run own server, then send me PM

On the SF8008 it's a little tricky to set up instead of just wg up on modern Kernels but it works, yes!
I did it with an extra network interface config + ifup.

The maxytec with openATV cant run wireguard at the moment cause there are kernel modules missing which have been added to openpli in the meantime.

But yes, both demand and support are getting better!

I am now confused about quite everything what you wrote . As far as I understand you, you had issues with maxytec but you also say that sf8008 is a little tricke to be set up and that you did it with an extra network interface config + ifup. Which means, you run wireguard successfully on SF8008?

Demand and support are getting better? Of what, wireguard? I guess I do not understand exactly what you mean with it.

I ask, because I do not see/find any guides or description at all for the usage, be it openpli or openAtv.

As if everybody has solutions but nobody wrote anything, then it is hard to find it out, I would think that devs would be interested to nail this before final release of whatever next stable release is and for that people would need to know how to set it up and if there are no guides, there are no testers too, especially when it comes to things like sophisticated wireguard configuration, it can get tricky.

I received right now PM from another user that he/she might have connection drops, which I can not report on my side.

So, how many do run wireguard successfully on OpenATV (whatever device it is)? But main quesiton is why devs who implemented it did not write up documentation about it or if they did why did it get lost/where?

Here some more pics from GUI:

As for openpli, I neither have your device nor time for openpli, but all of it should be quite the same. Very important for me was to see if the performance is good as well as if there are some unexpected things like crashes, so far nothing, works perfectly on sf8008. How about your sf8008, does wireguard on it work properly and stable, can you make any performance tests or similar?

Hi I'm wanting to use wireguard from my VPN provider.

I can get the wg.conf file from keepsolid VPN.

What I have done so far is

    install wireguard

This creates a folder in etc called wireguard so I added my config in there but I'm not sure what to do next

    Edit I'm receiving this error

    Commands I have done

opkg update && opkg install wireguard-tools

    opkg install openresolv

    wg-quick up wg0

    Code:
    root@vuuno4k:~# wg-quick up wg0
